Electronic Information Science and Technology (A National First-Class Undergraduate Program)

Program History

The Electronic Information Science and Technology program traces its origins to the Electronic Technology program, which began enrolling students in 1994. With the continuous improvement of educational resources and the strengthening of the faculty team, undergraduate programs in Applied Electronic Technology Education and Electronic Information Engineering were launched in 1996 and 1999, respectively. In 2003, the university began offering the undergraduate program in Electronic Information Science and Technology. The program has now accumulated 27 years of experience in undergraduate education and was approved as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2020.

Building on the strengths of this program, the university was approved to offer two professional master’s degree programs: Vocational and Technical Education in Information Technology in 2016, and Electronic Information in Integrated Circuits in 2019.

Program Features

First, the program has developed a relatively complete practical teaching system supported by practice bases. It has established four practice bases in cooperation with well-known enterprises and leading universities in the field. In recent years, nearly RMB 5 million has been invested in laboratory construction.

Second, the program promotes the deep integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education with professional education. It offers innovation and entrepreneurship courses, organizes related activities, selects undergraduate students to participate in faculty research projects, and has established a project-based and research-oriented teaching system.

Third, supported by the professional master’s degree program in Electronic Information, with a focus on Integrated Circuits, as well as disciplinary and research platforms such as the Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Sensors and Advanced Sensor Materials, the program has developed distinctive directions including Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence, and Advanced Electronic Components. These directions have provided strong support for program development and the continuous improvement of talent cultivation quality.

Educational Objectives

Guided by the principles of holistic education and the all-round cultivation of students, the program adheres to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education and gives priority to moral education. Rooted in Hunan, serving the nation, and oriented toward the world, the program aims to cultivate high-quality application-oriented professionals with sound moral character, broad knowledge, and strong practical abilities, who are able to meet the needs of economic, social, scientific, and technological development.

Graduates of this program are expected to possess a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, circuits, and computer science; systematically master the fundamental theories, specialized knowledge, and practical skills required in electronic information science; and receive rigorous training in scientific thinking, scientific experimentation, and preliminary scientific research.

Five years after graduation, graduates are expected to have achieved the following outcomes:

1. Demonstrate sound engineering practice ability, preliminary scientific research competence, and innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities, and be able to apply professional knowledge to understand, analyze, and solve problems in the field of electronic information.

2. Demonstrate the ability to think independently, carry out tasks effectively, collaborate in teams, and communicate efficiently.

3. Possess the ability for lifelong learning, and be able to keep abreast of and master new products, technologies, theories, and the latest developments in the electronic information industry.

4. Possess cross-disciplinary learning ability, an international perspective, and foreign language competence.

5. Demonstrate professional ethics, humanistic literacy, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Faculty

Through both talent recruitment and internal development, the Electronic Information Science and Technology program has built a faculty team with a high level of academic qualifications and a well-balanced structure in terms of professional titles, age distribution, educational background, disciplinary fields, and research directions.

The program currently has 17 full-time faculty members, including 3 professors, 5 associate professors, and 9 lecturers. Faculty members with senior professional titles account for 47% of the total. Fifteen faculty members hold doctoral degrees, including one with an overseas doctoral degree, accounting for 88% of the faculty. In terms of age structure, 7 faculty members are under the age of 40, 7 are between 41 and 50, and 3 are between 51 and 60.

The faculty team includes one Hunan Provincial Academic Leader, two Young Backbone Teachers of Hunan Provincial Universities, and two Hunan Provincial Young Teaching Experts. Several faculty members have won awards in teaching competitions in Hunan Province. Two faculty members have been recognized as Excellent Advisors in the National Undergraduate Optoelectronic Design Competition, and three have been recognized as Excellent Advisors in the Hunan Provincial “Challenge Cup” Competition. The faculty team has twice received Hunan Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.

Core Courses

Circuit Analysis, Analog Electronics, Digital Electronics, Algorithms and Data Structures, Electromagnetic Fields and Waves, Fundamentals of Microwave Technology, Microcomputer Principles and Interfacing, Principles and Applications of Microcontrollers, Signals and Systems, Principles of Communication, Digital Signal Processing, Semiconductor Physics, Quantum Information Technology, and other related courses.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Electronic Information Science and Technology program are highly adaptable to a wide range of engineering and technical fields. They enjoy broad employment prospects and a high employment rate. Graduates may work in electronic information-related enterprises, engaging in the design and development, production, operation, and technical management of electronic products and equipment.

They may also work in government departments, public institutions, or enterprises, undertaking the assembly, commissioning, testing, safe operation, maintenance, and management of electromechanical equipment, communication equipment, computer-controlled systems, and related devices.

In addition, approximately 30% of graduates pursue further study. In recent years, the program’s postgraduate admission rate has consistently ranked among the highest at the university. A number of outstanding graduates have earned doctoral degrees from leading universities in China and abroad, and have become key professionals in technical or managerial positions.
